The New York Times reports that, for the big fall auctions in New York this November, Christie’s will offer a five-foot tall bronze sculpture by Willem de Kooning that stood at the entrance of his Long Island studio.
‘Clamdigger’ (1972) is being sold by the daughters of Lisa de Kooning, who inherited the scultpure from her father when he died in 1997. From The Times:
“It is a depiction of the artist himself,” said Brett Gorvy, Christie’s worldwide chairman of postwar and contemporary art. “It is the closest de Kooning came to a self-portrait and was created specifically at a time when he was pushing the boundaries.”
A Christie’s spokeswoman said the work is expected to sell for between $25 million and $35 million.
